IIT Bombay
The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay is one, among the
six IITs - the
premier (!) undergraduate engineering institutions in
India. The other IITs are located
at Delhi, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, and Madras. The admission
to the IITs and the Institute of Technology, Benares
Hindu University (IT-BHU) is through a
nation-wide exam known as the
Joint Entrance Examination (IIT-JEE).
The examinees are grilled on three subjects:
chemistry, physics and mathematics, wherein the problem-solving
skills and grasp of fundamentals in the aforementioned
subjects are emphasized. About 75,000-100,000 students take the
exam, of which around 2000 are finally selected.
IIT Bombay is located in Powai, which is
around 15 miles from "downtown" Bombay. The scenic campus,
with its serene surroundings, provides the ideal milieu
for the young and creative minds that enter academia to
blossom:) For a flavor of the language-of-IITians, take
a look at the
IIT-B dictionary.
There are twelve
student hostels/dorms
on campus. I stayed
in
Hostel 6 (Room 267 for the most part) during my
four years at IIT. Here's information on
some of the H6-Alumni (Hexalites)
from IIT Bombay.
