Dr. Ali Erdemir
is a Staff Scientist in the Tribology Section of Argonne
National Laboratory, Argonne, IL. He received his BS
in Metallurgy from Istanbul Technical University in
1977 and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Materials Science
and Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology
in 1982 and 1986, respectively. After joining Argonne
National Laboratory in 1987 as a principal investigator
in the Tribology Section, he has pioneered the development
of several new materials and coatings with exceptional
friction and wear properties. Specifically, he has developed
self-lubricating boron-based coatings and lubricant
additives for a wide range of engine applications; diamond,
diamonlike, and nano-structured carbide derived carbon
films providing exceptional friction and wear properties;
hard nano-structured nitride, carbide and boride coatings
for tooling and transportation applications. In recognition
of his pioneering work in the field, Dr. Erdemir has
received several prestigious awards and honors, including
three R&D-100 Awards (in 1991, 1998, and 2003);
two Al Sonntag Awards (in 1992 and 2001) and an Edmond
E. Bisson Award (in 1998) from the Society of Tribologists
and Lubrication Engineers; the Innovative Research Award
of ASME-International in 1999; Discover Magazine Award
in 1998; Director's Award of Argonne National Laboratory
in 1999; Distinguished Alumni Award of the Georgia Institute
of Technology in 2000. He has been elevated to the ranks
of a Fellow by ASM-International in 2001 and by the
Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers in
2003. Dr. Erdemir has been an active member of several
professional societies including ASME, STLE, ASM-International,
and AVS. He has published more than 100 refereed journal
articles in the field and presented more than 170 papers
at international conferences. He holds 6 U.S. patents. |
