Research Interests: Materials Characterization, Nondestructive Evaluation, Elastic Wave Propagation, and Ultrasonic and Optical Sensors

My research interests are focused on understanding the dynamic behavior of materials and the development of nondestructive techniques for the characterization of material properties. I am particularly interested in the characterization of thermal and mechanical properties of micro- and nanoscale structures using optical and ultrasonic methods. Quantitative measurement and understanding of the thermo-mechanical behavior of materials on micro- and nanometer length scales are critical to the development of a wide variety of emerging material systems including: nanostructured materials, nanoresonators, thin films, ceramic coatings, etc. The physical properties of these material systems are intrinsically heterogeneous and length scale dependent, and the measurement of their scale specific material properties is needed in order to accurately predict their functional characteristics and reliability.

I am also interested in structural health monitoring applications that are tailored to evaluating the continued fitness of various civil infrastructures including pedestrian and vehicular bridges. The health (or fitness) of these infrastructures depend on their material and geometrical properties, which may change due to ageing or severe loading conditions, leading to adverse system performance.
